Arangetram
The debut as a Bharatanatyam performing artist
An arangetram is the first official solo performance of a Bharatanatyam artist in training. With the teacher’s permission, the student presents a complete margam to an invited audience for the first time.
The arangetram marks the completion of an important first stage of training. At the same time, it is not an endpoint: it marks the beginning of a new stage in which the dancer can continue to develop as a performing artist.
A special tradition
An arangetram is a festive and auspicious occasion, prepared and presented according to certain traditions.
Before the performance, a puja takes place in which the stage and the performing artists are blessed. Family, friends and other guests attend the performance. Senior artists and other respected members of the artistic community are also often invited.
Showing respect to gurus and senior artists is an important part of the arangetram tradition.
Some dance schools also present a certificate after the performance.

Arangetram at Sri Vinayaka
Over the past four decades, twenty students of Sri Vinayaka have completed their arangetram.
For the student, the preparation is an intensive period that includes:
- Dance and preparation
- Rehearsals
- Rehearsals with a live orchestra
- Preparation for the final performance
I guide the student throughout the preparation leading up to the performance.
For me, every arangetram remains a special moment in a student’s development.
Three former students of Sri Vinayaka — Jolanda Boejarath, Gita Annandsingh and Fayaaz Kalloe — have established their own dance schools.
