Vocal & Music
Indian classical vocal music — Hindustani or Carnatic
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa
At Sri Vinayaka, students can choose between two traditions:
Hindustani classical vocal music
The classical music tradition of North India.
Carnatic classical vocal music
The classical music tradition of South India.
Each tradition has its own character and repertoire.

My musical background
I trained in Hindustani classical vocal music with the late Sri Koustuv Roy at Codarts Rotterdam.
In India, I also studied Carnatic music with, among others, Smt. Charumathi Ramachandran and Sri Seetharam Sharma.
My knowledge of both musical traditions forms the foundation of my vocal teaching and also plays an important role in the way I teach Bharatanatyam.

The vocal lessons
Students choose either Hindustani or Carnatic classical vocal music. The foundation course takes approximately two years and includes:
- Swarasthana – recognising and singing the different notes accurately
- Voice training
- Basic music theory
- Playing the tanpura
- Basic harmonium playing
- Approximately ten compositions in different ragas
- One or two stage presentations
Advanced training
Students who wish to continue beyond the foundation course in Hindustani or Carnatic music can be guided towards advanced training with specialised teachers from India who are affiliated with Sri Vinayaka.
